Alexandre de Villedieu

Alexandre de Villedieu , or Alexander de Villa Dei in Latin, born with worms 1175 with Villedieu in Normandy and died in 1240, is a Poète and Grammairien French.

Alexandre de Villedieu held school with Paris with Rodolphe and Yson. He composed in 1209, under the title of Doctrinale Puerorum , a grammar in worms hexameters whose success at the time same of its first publication was extraordinary. Immediately adopted by all the establishments scholastics, the work, for the majority made up in worms Leonine S, was a long time traditional. Henri of Ghent and the poet Beccari, the friend of Pétrarque also quoted this work which made the object of innumerable notes, comments and even supplements in worms and prose. It was one of the first works whose name was multiplied considerably by the invention of the Imprimerie so much so that one finds of them innumerable editions in Italy, in Germany and France. The least rare go back from 1501 and 1514. When assembled doctors with Malines in 1514 decided that one would explain from now on in the schools the rudiments of Despautère, the Doctrinal of Alexandre fell in disuse in teaching at the time of Érasme, which however said in his treaty of puerile education Of pueris statim ac liberaliter instituendis that this didactic poem was “still bearable” in comparison with the Floreti which one watered youth then. The base of this grammar is in the writings of Priscien, the grammairien of Césarée of the 6th century.

Colleague and perhaps friend of Sacrobosco in the Sorbonne, Villedieu had also put Of will sphæra ( On the sphere ), Of arte numerandi ( Arithmétique ), the Calendrier and the Scriptures in worms.
