Alexandre Vachon

Alexandre Vachon (August 16th, 1885 - March 30th, 1953) is a prelate and a Canadian scientist who was Archevêque of Ottawa of 1940 with 1953.

Born on August 16th, 1885 with Saint-Raymond, in the province of Quebec, it made its studies with the Petit seminar of Quebec and with the Université Laval, where it accepted diplomas of third cycle in canonical Droit, philosophy and theology. It continued its studies in sciences and accepted controls with the Massachusetts Institute of Technology and the Université Harvard.

Ordered priest in 1910, he taught chemistry with the Université Laval before becoming the senior of the Faculty of Science in 1937 and finally the vice-chancellor of the university in 1939. One year later, the pope Pie XII named it with the head of the ecclesiastical province of Ottawa.

During this time, Mgr Vachon had been interested in the Génie of the mines and the behavior of the international congresses eucharistic. He had also become the president of the National council of research, of the Conseil of the fisheries of Canada and member of the board of directors of Radio-Canada.

Following its episcopal dedication, it had taken for currency AD Jesum per Mariam , which refers to the close link between the immaculate Cœur of Marie and the Sacré-coeur of Jesus. His/her university colleagues Adrien Pouliot and Ernest Lemieux had offered to him in gift a episcopal Crosse at the time of its sacring.

The Vachon bishop had deep a Spiritualité mariale and in 1947, it had organized the Congrès marial of Ottawa, which joins together more than 200.000 catholics of Canada and the universe and which at the time marked much the consciences. The faithful ones had come to request in the Parc Landsdowne for the maintenance of peace in the difficult context of the beginning of the Cold war and the end of the Second world war.

In reward for the success of the congress, Mgr Vachon was named Roman Count, which enabled him to enter the intimate circle of the pope. He would have been candidate for the Sacré college. In 1950, it had gone in the Eternal City to assist with the celebrations of the Holy Week.

In 1951, Mgr Vachon pled in favor of the school rights of the Free-Ontarian S following the publication of the Rapport Hope. He was member of French associations and wanted to defend the inheritance cultural Canadian-French.

Deceased on March 30th, 1953, it had marked much the intellectual and spiritual life of its time. The house of sciences of the nature of the Laval University was named in its honor.

Honors

  • 1952 : Medal Glory of Escolle decreed by the association of the graduates of the Laval University for exceptional contribution to its profession and the company.
