Alexandre Nevski (in Russian: АлександрНевский) is a Soviet film epic carried out by Sergueï Eisenstein presented in 1938. The music, indissociable of work, is of Sergueï Prokofiev.
Synopsis
The film recalls an event headlight of the Russian history at the 13th century: opposition of the teutonic prince Alexandre Nevski to the invasion of the knights and in particular the Battle of the lake Peïpous which put an end to their Eastern expansion.
Comment
The film is an order of the Stalinist authorities and is designed at the origin like a film epic of propaganda against the Nazisme: the knights teutonic and their carry-swords, invaders of the territories Russian, are presented with Svastika S and helmets evoking those of the contemporary Wehrmacht and evoke a threat clearly. In September of the same year, is 2 months before the exit of film, the Accords of Munich avoided a war. Of this fact the reading of film must always be done on two levels: the 13th century marries a contemporary context. By this page of history, Russia shows that it is ready to be defended vis-a-vis an unspecified invader but already very designated.Alexandre Nevski harangue people to face a double threat: Mongolian in the east, Teutons in the west. The Mongol is cheating, Teuton is a soldier without pity. Alexandre decides in the urgency to attack the man of war, the cheating one will have patience. Patriotic bravery mingles with stereotypes disseminated in the two camps: the coward, the generous one, the brave man, sacrificed.
The closes-up of faces of Edouard Woven, characteristic of films of Eisenstein, accentuate bravery or treachery.
Eisenstein sets up here the audio-visual counterpoint: the music of Prokofiev causes interesting contrasts with the images.
The realizer was very supervised for this film and the actors are members of the Party. Moreover, typing was prohibited as well as the intellectual assembly. But the feat of ingenuity of this film resides in the fact that in spite of the censure, the realizer succeeded has to revolutionize his own cinema.
