Alexandre III of Scotland

Alexandre III is king d' Écosse from July 6th, 1249 to March 19th, 1286.

Alexandre III is the only son of the king Alexandre II and his second wife. He was born on September 4th, 1241 with Roxburgh.

He becomes king of Scotland at eight years, at the time of died of his father, on July 8th, 1249 and is crowned with the abbey of Scone on July 13rd of the same year.

He very maintains good relationships with his father-in-law the king Henri III of England from which he agrees to be the vassal one for his English possessions at the time of the homage of 1251. He however refused to lend calling upon homage for Scotland which he was to obtain the agreement of his Parliament.

After the intervention of the king Håkon IV of Norway in the Hébrides in 1263, it is under its reign that is signed the July 2nd 1266 the treaty of Perth which definitively recognizes the suzerainty of Scotland on Hébrides and the Island of Man against a payment of 4000 " merks" more 100 " merks" per annum with perpetuity.

He had married on December 26th, 1251 with York Marguerite of England (1240 - 1275), girl of the king Henri III of England, of or three children:

  • Marguerite of Scotland, dead in April 1283, wife of Eric II of Norway, which was the parents of the queen Marguerite I {{Re}}
  • Alexandre, born in 1264 dead in January 1284.
  • David, born in 1270 died in 1281.

Widower for ten years and from now on without heir, it has married in the hope to have a successor, the November 1st 1285 with Jedburgh, Yolande, girl of the count Robert IV of Dreux. He dies accidentally in 44 years of a fall of horse on March 19th, 1286.

He is buried with the abbey of Dunfermline.
