Alexandre Guilmant
Felix Alexandre Guilmant (born with Boulogne-sur-Mer the March 12th 1837 and died with Meudon the March 29th 1911) was Organiste and Compositeur.
Raise of his/her father then of Jacques-Nicolas Lemmens, it became Organiste and professor in his birthplace. In 1871 it was named with the Orgue Église of the Holy Trinity, with Paris. Consequently, its career of concert performer virtuoso starts: it occurs in Europe as in America.
It founds in 1894 the Schola Cantorum (with Charles Bordes and Vincent d' Indy), and succeeds Charles-Marie Widor with the class of organ of the Conservatoire of Paris in 1896. With Andre Pirro, it publishes a collection of partitions, the Archives of the Masters of the Organ , gathering the compositions of many French classic authors (in 10 volumes, of 1898 with 1914). It proceeds in the same way for foreign Masters with the traditional School of the Organ (25 volumes in all, of 1898 with 1903).
In parallel, it is devoted to the composition, and particularly for its instrument. One can quote his Pièces in various styles (18 collections in all), his 8 Sonate S , or in a more liturgical register its noëls, its Sixty Interlude S in the Gregorian Tonalité , the 12 books of the organist practices , the 10 books of the liturgical Organist … What leaves a very important work on the whole, more especially as in addition to the music for organ, Guilmant composed of the chamber music, the vocal music (in particular of the masses for chorus and organ), a Symphonie Cantate ( ARIANE ), as well as a lyric scene ( Bethsabée ).
It should be stressed that its sonatas for organ, although baptized thus by its author, are actually symphonies for organ of which they follow the form and the structure. In the field of the symphonic organ, one owes him Légende and symphonic Final in minor D, opus 71 composed in 1888, and symphonic Piece in the minor, opus 75, composed in 1892.
