Alexandre Colin
Alexandre Colin , born with Paris the December 5th 1798 and dead the November 21st 1875, is a painter and Lithographe French.
Close friend of Delacroix and Bonington, it belongs to the romantic school, covering subjects inspired of Shakespeare, Byron, Walter Scott. Alexandre Colin is known to be a large portraitist, in particular of actors in the costumes of their roles. He also paints romantic subjects, sights of Italy and scenes of the fight for the Guerre of Greek independence. Like Delacroix and many artists and intellectuals of his time, it takes part in two important exposures to the profit of the Greeks to the Lebrun gallery in 1826.
Biography
Entered in 1814 with the 3Ecole Nationale Sup3erieure of the fine arts, he is the pupil of Girodet before joining in 1816 the workshop of Pierre-Narcisse Guerin, attended by Delacroix. It begins with the Salon in 1819 with a portrait from woman, and 29 works until in to it 1868 exposes. It obtains there a medal of second class in 1824 and 1831, and one of first class in 1840. In 1825, Bonington and Colin make a stay of a few months with London. They are joined there by Delacroix, then return together to Paris via Saint-Omer, where they become acquainted with the painter Hippolyte-Joseph Cuvelier (1803-1876). Alexandre Colin exposes three fabrics to the Royal Academy of London in 1829.From 1834 to 1838, his/her friend Charles Rivet (1800-1872), appointed prefect of Nimes, entrusts to him the direction of the art school of the city. It calls there his brother, Paul-Hubert Colin, with the head of the school of sculpture and drawing of ornament which it has just created.
Named in 1849 Master of drawing of the Polytechnic school, it realizes in 1863-1865 for the School of the portraits in medallion of Lamblardie, Monge, Carnot, Prior-Duvernois, Fourcroy, Lagrange and Berthollet, as well as and of Napoleon III.
In 1851, it is in charge of the decoration of the church Saint-Roch in Paris in the 1st district. It carries out there two classified tables historic buildings, the Funeral of saint Nicolas and Saint Nicolas alleviating the storm .
