Biography
; Beginnings Born in Abreschviller, Alexandre Chatrian entered to the college of Phalsbourg about 1842, in industrial class. He stopped his studies in 1844 and left to earn his living in Belgium, as accountant, during 2 years. In 1847, he was Master of study to the college of Phalsbourg when he met Erckmann. They became friendly and spent the summer together in the the Vosges. After the French revolution of 1848, they started to publish serials but discounted success did not arrive as quickly as they had believed it. Chatrian sought another work then and was engaged in 1852 as employee with the Compagnie of the railroads of the East.
; Success After one break-in period, they started to be known towards 1859: the regular publication of tales and news Fantastique S attracts many readers to them. They thus settled both in Paris, close to the Gare of the East to be able to return regularly in Lorraine.
Chatrian bought a property with the Raincy, where it moved in in May 1869 with Adélaïde Riberon, his/her partner with whom it had two children.
After 1872, Chatrian wrote theater rather while Erckmann dealt with the novels.
Chatrian took its retirement of railroad worker in 1884 and was withdrawn then with Villemomble.
; End In 1885, after the mitigated success of Bilberry , Chatrian gave up the theater and settled with Saint-Dié. It fell sick then and its mental health felt some.
It negotiated a new convention with their editor in 1886, that Erckmann refused to sign. The following year, it reveals in Erckmann that it remunerated “Nègre S” with their pools: it is the end of their association and their friendship.
He dies in Villemomble in 1890.
