Alexandre Alexeïeff

Alexandre Alexeïeff (born the August 5th 1901 with Kazan in Russia - died the August 9th 1982 with Paris), French realizer of Russian origin of Cartoon film, is one of the creators of the technique of the animated Gravure. Initially junior by the navy tsarist, then engraver and illustrator, Alexandre Alexeïeff becomes one of the founding fathers of the Cinéma of animation (with in particular Emile Cohl or Paul Grimault).

Biography

He passes his more tender youth to Constantinople, where his/her father was a military attach3e.

In 1921, it leaves Russia for the France, where it begins its relation with the illustration and the Animation. Alexeïeff Maria with Claire Parker , a rich person American coed of arts who lived Paris.

It is in Alexeïeff that one owes the process of “the screen of pins”, that he invented with Claire Parker. It is about a board bored by thousands of holes through which pins, more or less inserted then enlightened laterally, make it possible to create an effect of relief, by the shadow of the éplingles, giving to the image the aspect of an engraving moving.

The pins, by their various positions, make it possible to create plays of shade and light. The process will be used for the first time to animate a musical table, One night on the mount Chauve , based on a music of Modeste Moussorgski and which bears its name.

A documentary film of Norman McLaren, records Alexandre Alexeïeff giving a course of use of its screen of pin, at the time of its passage by the National office of the Film of the Canada. One also sees another use of the screen of pin in documentary on the work of Norman Mc Laren.

Alexandre Alexeïeff, in addition to his experimental films, will animate many publicities, in particular for Renault, Esso or the cookies Brun.

He was present in 1956 at Cannes with the meeting of the realizers by whom débutat the construction of a culture of animation.
