Alexander Schleicher ASW 27
Presentation
ASW 27 is a sailplane of class FAI 15 meters, it is built out of composite materials and by Alexander Schleicher GMBH & Co. It accomplished its first flight in 1995 and certified in 1997. The W indicates that the engineer responsible for the project is Gerhard Waibel. The ASW 27 is equipped with camber flaps, Winglet S, of a train returning and a system of ballast. The struture of the sailplane is composed of a mixture of , Carbon fiber Kevlar and Polyéthylène. This allowed the light structure, resistance to carry great quantities of water in the ballasts, and of this fact allowing a great choice of wing load possible with the variation of the climatic conditions. The reinforced fuselage was tested to check good protection against the impact at the time of a crash landing.
The version B consisted has to replace the flexible tanks of the ballasts by ballast structural and to lengthen the Winglet S.
The ASW 27 is the substitute of ASW 20 in the range. It does not have a extension of wings to carry the scale to 18 mothers. It was a decision of design to continue a version without compromise of a sailplane of 15 meters scale, and the “future modifications of engine or the posterior increases in scale were specifically eliminated”
The recent introduction of ASG 29 supplemented the range in this class but moreover allows to fly in 18 meters and motorized.
