Alexander Hood, 1st Bridport Viscount
The Admiral Alexander Hood, 1st Vicomte Bridport (December 2nd 1726 - May 2nd 1814) was a Officier of the Royal Navy during the Guerres of the French revolution and the Napoleonean Guerres. He was the brother of the admiral Samuel Hood, 1st Hood Viscount.
He enters Navy towards 1740, is named lieutenant in 1746, Commander in 1756, and is useful like Flag captain under the Rear-admiral Saunders in the Mediterranean. During the War Seven Year old, it takes part in the Bataille of the Cardinals out of bay of Quiberon the November 20th 1759; in 1761, it takes again the Warwick , ship of 60 guns which had been taken by the French in 1756. Until the end of the war in 1763, Hood is captain of the '' Africa '' in the Mediterranean.
In 1778, it is named on the '' Robust '' and takes part the July 22nd in the first battle of Ushant; it takes the defense of the admiral Keppel when this one passes in martial Cour following this battle. In 1780, it is promoted Rear-admiral. At the time of the war of American independence, it takes share with the rescue of Gibraltar in 1787.
He is elected with the House of Commons, but takes again the sea when the war with the France in 1793 bursts. June 1st 1794 (13 meadow year II), it takes part in the battle of the " Glorious First off June" on the '' Royal George '', in the squadron ordered by the admiral Lord Howe. For its exploits in this combat, it will be high with the Pairie of Ireland, as a Baron Bridport .
The June 23rd 1795, it delivers the Bataille of Groix and captures three French ships. Although Hood is criticized in Navy to have carried it more clearly, the British public regards the battle as a great victory. It is then high with the peerage of Great Britain, and it is promoted Vice-amiral British Navy.
Until it withdraws in 1800, it orders the Flotte of the English Channel. In 1796 and 1797, it directs the war starting from London. In 1797, after the repression of the Mutiny of Spithead, it takes again the sea. In 1798, it personally directs the Blocus of Brest until the changing John Jervis in 1800.
In reward of its states of service, it is made Vicomte. It passes in retirement last the years of its life, and dies in 1814. He was knight of the Ordre of the Bath.
