Alexander Hegius von Heek

Alexander Hegius von Heek , born in 1433 and dead the December 7th 1498, is a German Humaniste , called thus because of its birthplace, " Heek" in Westphalia.

In its youth he is pupil of Thomas A. Kempis, at this moment canon of the convent of Holy-Agnes with Zwolle. In 1474, it settles with Deventer in Holland, where it founds or succeeds the direction of the capitulary school which became famous for the number of its distinguished pupils. With the number of the latter, most eminent is Érasme   ; others such as Hermann von dem Busche, the missionary of the Humanism, Conrad Goclenius (Gockelen), Konrad Mutian known as " Conrad Mutianus (Muth von Mudt) " and the pope Adrien VI.

Its writings which are appeared short as Poésie S, philosophical tests , grammatical notes and letters, were published after its death by its pupil Jacobus Faber. They reveal a considerable knowledge of the Latin , but less of the Greek , on the value of which he strongly insisted.

The principal complaint of once died Hegius, is to be known not by its work published, but by its services with the cause of humanism. It succeeded in removing the obsolete handbooks and the medieval methods of instruction, and led its pupils to study the classic authors themselves. Helping by generosity of the student poor, it was ruined although equipped with a considerable fortune, and with its death it had gotten rid of all except its books and clothing.
