Alex Osborn (May 24th, 1888 - May 4th, 1966), advertizing American, founder in 1925 and vice-president of 1939 to 1960 of the agency of American Publicity BBDO.
He is the inventor of the Brainstorming, which he launched in the Années 1930 to promote (successfully) his agency near his customers and of prospective customers prospect.
He reveals of them the receipt and the four basic rules in 1948 in his book Your Creative Power. How to Use Imagination to brighten life, to get ahead , delivers rather directed towards the humanistic creativity of personal development.
It gives the origin of the word brainstorming to it. The participants called these creative meetings of the brainstorm sessions. Why?
“When I first organized such group-thinking in our company participating Barton, Batten, Durstine & Osborn, the early dubbed our efforts “Brainstorm Sessions”; and quite aptly so because, in this box, “brainstorm” means using the brain to storm has creative problem - and C so in commando fashion, with each stormer attacking the same objective. ”
By a certain irony of the history, it found its ideas of advertizing executive and head of undertaking (and it is his/her son which tells it) not during brainstorming, but while sleeping, in the coach-berths of the train Chicago-New York which it once borrowed per week.
BBDO does not use its technique for a long time any more.
