Alex Katunich alias Dirk Launches (August 18th, 1976), bass player and founding member of the group Incubus (1990-2002)

Incubus

Incubus is formed in 1990 by young teenagers: Torch Boyd (song/percussion: djembé), Mike Einziger (guitar), Alex Katunich (renamed Dirk Launches) and Jose Pasillas (battery). Even if its presence were not very noticed in the group, Alex were a key element all the same through the music of Incubus. It associated funk influences and jazz with it. Were its parts remarkable, especially in Deep Inside , Are You In? , Battlestar Scratchlactica , Sink Beneath the line and Nice to know you . Its method " slap-mute" is particularly appreciated and can be heard in the solos made on Redefine and Sink beneath the line . Its parts live also were very appreciated other musicians.

It had to leave the group on October 31st, 2002 for oneself-saying musical divergences. Other rumors circulate however, most current being that of the conflicts which it had relating to with Brandon Boyd the angle of creativity used by the group. Its tough and whimsical character would be also another cause of this departure, especially after the conflicts created at the time of the compostion of has Off Crow Left The Murder (February 2004). Put besides that, the career of Incubus does not cease evolving/moving, in spite of the fact that the absence of Alex is felt.

After Incubus

Dirk Lance was replaced in 2003 by Ben kenney, ex-guitarist of the Roots. Its arrival in the group was disputed due to a completely opposite style with that of Dirk. In spite of this difference, its know-how created a revival in the sound of Incubus.

In 2003, he worked for Stickman Entertainment, group creating of the video games. Much thought that its contract with this company was only one answer to Incubus, which had left The Odyssey (short film of 27 min, appearing on the BO of Halo 2 ). This fact was cancelled by the fact that Alex signed the contract well before the exit of the BO of Halo 2.

He plays with a south-Californian group (Willie' S Nerve Clinic) of jam/funk since April 2006, date in its first official concert after his departure of Incubus.
