Biography

Alex James discovered football in the team of young people of a local club before joining Raith Rovers in 1922. After three seasons with Starks Park and a hundred matches it was engaged by Preston North End in 1925. During the four years that it passed in the second division it registered 55 goals in 157 matches. Following a financial disagreement with its club it joined the Arsenal FC of Herbert Chapman in 1929.

Even if it were never very prolific (27 goals for 261 matches), it was often the last frontier runner and fed from the more offensive players like Cliff Bastin. It gained the title of champion of England to four recoveries with Arsenal (in 1931,1933,1934 and 1935), like by twice the Coupe of England, by registering a goal at the time of the finale of 1930.

On the international plan, he knew only eight selections with the Scotland, but belonged to the team which curtly beat England on the score from 5 to 1 on her lawn of Wembley in 1928. He registered one doubled at the time of this meeting.

Alex James withdrew football in 1937. The old one was used in a regiment as Artillerie during the Second world war and became journalist thereafter. After having carried out its return to Arsenal as a trainer of the teams of young people he died suddenly in 1953 at the 51 years age. James belongs to the Hall off Famed of the national museum of British football since 2005.
