Alex Garland (born in 1970) is a British novelist, wire of the draftsman of press Nick Garland. He studied the history of art in University College School of Hampstead, and to the Université of Manchester.

The second novel of Garland,
Tesseract , was published in
1999. The book tells by interlacing them the life of selected inhabitants of
Manila among the gangsters, the housewives and the children of the streets which populate the city. The title indicates in English a cubic with 4 dimensions which symbolizes our incapacity to apprehend the complexity of the world beyond our own existence. This book was also adapted to the cinema by Oxyde Pang.
the Coma
the Coma , was published in
2004. He tells the history of a man fallen into the
Coma after brutellement being brutellement beaten by an group of youth from which he tried to protect an young woman. After his exit of the coma, the hero narrator tries to give of the order in his life while wondering whether it is really awaked or if it is simply dreaming. The novel is illustrated by Estampe S carried out by the father of Garland, Nicholas.
The novel was criticized for its format rather runs for a work sold with the prices classically applied for longer work. It however received critical warm welcome, in particular because of its elegant way to cover a rather complex subject. By certain sides, the fact that the novel is short reinforces the impressions which it generates at the reader: one can read it of a draft to benefit from the oppressive environment which emerges some. By certain sides, the Coma approaches the Fantastique.

Garland wrote the scenario of the film
28 Days later of Danny Boyle, like that of
Sunshine of the same realizer. Garland also wrote a first version of the scenario of the film adaptation of the video game
Halo (planned for
2008).
