Alem, Maren in Kessel is an old commune Dutchwoman of the province of Brabant-Septentrional, which existed of 1821 to 1958. About 1813, with the communal distribution of the young person Kingdom of the Netherlands, three villages downstream from Lith on left bank of the Meuse: Alem, Maren and Kessel was installed like three independent communes. Already in 1819, one decides with a fusion and on January 1st, 1821, the commune of Alem, Maren in Kessel is founded. Het Wild and Gewande, hamlets even downstream, also formed part of it. About 1900, Gewande is transferred to the old commune of Empel in Meerwijk, which makes since 1971 part of the commune of Wood-the-Duke.

By the drain of the Meuse in the years 1930, Alem changes bank and province. Following this event, one removes the commune in 1958. Alem is transferred to the old commune of Rossum, which is attached to its turn in 1999 with the current commune of Maasdriel in the province of the Gueldre, while Maren, Kessel and Het Wild was annexed by the commune of Lith in the province of the Brabant-Septentrional .
