History

Prehistory and Antiquity

The archaeological excavations show that the area of Aleksandovac was occupied as of the Préhistoire. Vestiges going back to the Bronze Age were discovered in Ivkovića Kuće and Džodin Vinograd, and of the vestiges of the age of the stone to Stepića kuće .

As from the 4th century before Jesus Christ, the area was inhabited by the Celtes.

A village called Kožetin was built at the bottom of a drained lake.

Two assumptions were formulated in connection with the origin of this name:

  1. the Celts, romanized, honoured particularly Diane, the goddess of hunting and the moon. The preferred animal of Diane being the goat's milk cheese, into Serb koza , they would have added the suffix - etina to form the name of Kozetina which, after a light transformation would have become Kožetin.
  2. According to a local legend, with the site of Kozetin was a covered church of goatskins. Thus the village would have been called Kožni, which became later Kožetin.

At all events, by its geographical position, the village was brought to play a big role in Serbia.

The Middle Ages and modern times

The first written mention of Kožetin goes up with 1196: the village is quoted in a dédicade written by Stefan Nemanja with the Monastère of Studenica:

“Me Stefan Nemanja, to which belongs the Serb ground, I give to the monastery of Studenica… the village of Kožetin and Podrumi with his neighborhoods…”.

Into 1882, by a decree of the king Milan Ier and with the agreement of the inhabitants, the name of Kožetin was changed into that of Aleksandrovac.

Here the text of the declaration:

“Us, Milan 1st, by the grace of God and according to the will of the people, king de Serbie, on a proposal from Our Minister for the interior matters, decided: that the town of Kožetin, in the area of Krosovac, according to the wish of its inhabitants, " is now called; Aleksandrovac". At Belgrade, June 19th, 1882.”
