Edward Alexander Crowley (October 12th 1875 with Leamington Spa in the Warwickshire - February 1st 1947 with Hastings), known as Aleister Crowley , is a writer and British occultist .

Biography

Crowley, with the multiple personality, was also a player of failures, a mountaineer, a poet, a painter, an astrologer, a follower of the Drogue S,… He is known better in his occult writings and particularly by its Livre of the Law, the crowned book of Thelema. Crowley was also an influential member several occult organizations: the hermetic Order of the gilded paddle, a.A. and of the Ordo Templi Orientis.

He is the son of Edward Crowley, a brewer with the retirement. Aleister was high within a family over-devout member of the religious group of the Frères of Plymouth. His/her father was a fanatic preacher and it obliged Aleister to learn the Bible by heart. By challenge and rejection of this strict religious education, Aleister will use thereafter the nickname which his/her mother gave him in her childhood: " The Large Animal 666" apocalypse of Midsummer's Day.

He becomes member of the Golden Dawn where he is initiated with the Occultisme by Samuel Liddell Mathers. It made there for enemies its fellow-members William Butler Yeats and Arthur Edward Waite. His/her friend and associated Allan Bennett presents the ideas to him on the Bouddhisme.

The 8, 9 and 10 April 1904, with the Cairo, Crowley claim to have received a message by automatic writing. The supposed author of the message is an intelligent entity called Aiwass , generally comparable with the guardian angel of Aleister Crowley. This text, completely retranscribed in the “Book of the Law” ( Liber Al vel Legis ), constitutes the base of the philosophical system of Crowley: “Thelema”.
