In Belgium and with the Luxembourg, a alderman ( schepen in Dutch and Schöffe in German) is an elected official associated with the burgomaster.

The tasks of the aldermen vary according to the communes.
A commune will thus have for example an alderman of public works, an alderman of teaching, etc
Ils is elected by the town council in his center. their number varies according to the population of the commune (between 2 and 10).
Depuis 2006, the nationals of the European Union can become aldermen.

The burgomaster and the aldermen form what one calls the Collège of the burgomaster and aldermen (communal Collège in Walloon region).
