Alcántara

Alcántara (in Arab will el-Kantara , i.e. the Bridge ) is a commune of Spain, in the Province of Cáceres, in Estrémadure, located on left bank of the Tage.

History

Named in the Antiquity Norba Cæsarea or Interamnium , it is known for its Roman bridge with six symmetrical arches, built in the honor of Trajan by C. Iulius Lacer, as an inscription points out it. This bridge made it possible the Roman way of Norba with Conimbriga to cross the Tage.

The king Alphonse IX of León, took this city on the Moors in 1214 and made of them the chief town of the Ordre of Alcántara.

Saint Pierre of Alcántara, reformer of the Franciscains, was born to with it in 1499.
