Alblasserwaard
The Alblasserwaard is a natural area Dutchwoman located in the south-eastern part of the Holland-Southerner. The area has a surface of approximately 25.000 hectares and account approximately 170.000 inhabitants. The area draws its name from the river Alblas which crosses it.
In Alblasserwaard is celebrates it site of Kinderdijk, recognized like belonging to the World heritage of humanity by UNESCO in 1997.
Situation
Alblasserwaard is entirely surrounded by ways of water: in north, the area is delimited by the Lek, in the west by the Noord and in the south by the Merwede. In the east, the border with the area of the Vijfheerenlanden is formed by the Oude Zederik (dug in 1370 between Ameide and Meerkerk), the Canal of Merwede and the Linge.It is only after the completion of Oude Zederik that the area was entirely surrounded by river and that one can speak about a waard . The name Alblasserwaard date completion of the 14th century. Previously, most of this area was called Pays between Lek and Merwede .
History
The history of Alblasserwaard starts after the last glacial period, approximately 10.000 years ago. The wind created there Dune S which one always sees in the landscape, and which one calls in Dutch of the donken . The area had to be inhabited during the Préhistoire, but it is only during the Roman epoch that a relatively dense dwelling is attested.After one period of depopulation between 250 and the year 1000, one again finds a permanent dwelling as from the 11th century. The Draining and the Défrichement of Alblasserwaard were probably completed towards the last quarter of the 13th century.
Town and country planning
Roughly speaking , Alblasserwaard can be set out again in two parts:- the western and southern parts are strongly urbanized; they are made up of the communes of Alblasserdam, of Papendrecht, Sliedrecht, Hardinxveld-Giessendam and of Gorinchem
- the north parts, is and center are rather rural; they are made up of the communes of Nieuw-Lekkerland, Graafstroom, Liesveld, Giessenlanden and Zederik.
