Biography

After medical studies, Alberto Burri obtains its diploma for the occupation of doctor of the university of Perugia in 1940 and is useful in the Italian army during the Second world war. Captured with its unit in North Africa, it launches out in painting in 1944 whereas it is held with Hereford (Texas) in a camp of internment for prisoners of war. It then makes its first experiments of painting on jute bags.

Released in 1946, it settles with Rome where place has, the following year, its first personal exposure to the Galleria Margherita . In 1949, it exposes to Paris with the Living room of new realities. It is of this time which the first Catrami (tar) date and Muffe (moulds). In 1950, it founds the Groupe Origin. Starting from 1953, its exposures follow one another without stopping in France and in the United States.

Starting from 1952, it starts to carry out its famous series of the sacchi (bags), in which it includes in the composition of the bags in hessian, which it paints, scraper and plunges in the adhesive before covering them with worn and torn linens, of which it uses the holes, patchworks, abrasions or scratches, metaphors of ravaged, wounded and ensanglantée human flesh.

Starting from 1956, it introduces, according to the same principle, of the pieces of wood ( Legni , 1957), of industrial sheets rusted and subjected to a strong heat ( Ferri , 1958), then, in the Années 1960, of plastic flaring: they are the Combustioni , where the thin layers of plastic, deformations and perforated by the flames, take again the topic of the wound, physics or morals. This principle is then taken again by the American néo-dadaïstes, whose Burri is regarded as the precursor.

Starting from 1973, it carries out the cretti (cracks), compositions of very large size using of the resins which recall the cracks and fissurations of mud dried to the sun. The rhythmic use of the cracks as proceeded is not without pointing out old Chinese ceramics (Cesare Brandi).

Burri launches out then, in the Années 1970, the realization of works in Cellotex (mixture of sawdust and adhesive) with very few colors: black, white and gold.

In the town of Gibellina in Sicily, it realizes between 1985 and 1989 the Grande Cretto by recovering white Ciment a whole district destroyed by a Earthquake and given up by the inhabitants. It is about a monumental example of Land art . It is presented in the form of an immense cap ( coltre ) of white cement which is spread out over the south-eastern southern side of the mountain according to the form of an irregular quadrilateral of a few 300 meters out of 400. In cement great trenches were traced, 1,60 2 and depth meters to 3 meters of width, making it possible to the visitors to circulate. They follow the layout of the streets of the old city, and make it possible to restore the idea of the city before the earthquake.
