Albert Zafy

Albert Zafy (1927 -) was president of the Republic of Madagascar of 1993 to 1996.

Born in the province from Diégo Suarez, he is professor in Medicine (cardiologist). He was Ministre in the Government of the General Gabriel Ramanantsoa. In 1989, it belonged to the movement of the oppositon lifeblood and leader of the party UNDD and tries to reverse the president Didier Ratsiraka. In 1993, the opposition indicates it as being their candidate vis-a-vis for Didier Ratsiraka and beats this last with the second round with 53% of the voices.

Zafy did not support criticisms of the opposition and decided that the Prime Minister will not be any more elected by the National Assembly but will be named by the president in person. It thus appointed the president of the High Constitutional court (HCC) Norbert Ratsirahonana Prime Minister. It lost its popularity and was relieved by the National Assembly in 1997. It was beaten by Didier Ratsiraka at the time of the presidential election of 1997. It finishes third at the time of the presidential election of December 16th, 2001 that Marc Ravalomanana gained with the final one.
