Albert Tessier
Albert Tessier (March 6th 1895 - September 13rd 1976) was a priest, a professor, a historian and a pioneer of the Québécois Cinéma.
Native of Holy-Anne-with-the-Pérade, he is the son of Alphonse Tessier and Sophie Rompré, the junior by an family of five children. He studies at the school of the “Bottom Of Holy-Anne”, with the College of the Sacred Heart then to the seminar of Three-Rivers.
Having received its sacerdotal ordination of Mgr François-Xavier Nailsmith the June 29th 1920, it obtains its doctorate in Théologie with Rome in 1922. After literary studies with the catholic Institute of Paris, it returns to Quebec in 1924.
Become professor of history and literature with Three-Rivers, he is noticed for his methods of teaching avant-gardists, teaching the manner of fighting against idleness.
Tessier or “Tess” is promoted higher studies than the college trifluvien. It takes then the role of provincial person in charge of the Québécois domestic schools during several years. In 1937, it replaces Thomas Chapais with the pulpit of history of Canada of the Université Laval.
Its career in the cinema starts in 1925. With Maurice Proulx, Jean-Marie Poitevin, Louis-Roger Lafleur and Aloysius Vachet, it belongs to those which one calls the “priest-scenario writers”, who transmit the values of the Sacerdoce towards the big screen.
It realizes more than seventy films which will mark the development of the cinema in Canada. Its preferred topics are nature, the history, the religion, Three-Rivers, education, and the culture. All its films are approached in a real or probable context.
Tessier is recognized to have created the term “Mauricie”, which replaced the old expression of “valley of the Saint-Maurice”. Albert Tessier dies with the Hôpital Saint-Joseph the September 13rd 1976.
