Born the May 3rd 1864 with Clermont-Ferrand, it is catholic, republican and patriotic.
- After having failed the entrance examination of Saint-Cyr military school, it obtains the aggregation history and geography in 1889 and teaches in Paris, where he is professor with the Lycée Voltaire in 1897 Louis-the-Large and with in 1914.
- It is one of the members founders of the Société of History of the Revolution in 1904.
- Although nonmobilizable because of its age, it voluntarily engages in 1914. Sous-lieutenant with the 63e regiment of infantry, it is reported missing at the time of the offensive from Artois, while assembling to the attack with the combat of Thélus (Pas-de-Calais) the September 25th 1915.

Recruited as collaborator of monumental the General History directed by Ernest Lavisse, it is then chosen by this one to write and to direct a series of new handbooks of history after the recasting of the school programs of 1902.

- the trademark of this fertile popularizer is the importance given to the military Histoire and the Pédagogie by the illustration.
- Although they knew each other little, its name remained associated with that of most famous of its continuators, Jules Isaac, become his collaborator little before the war on the initiative of Lavisse.
