Albert John Cook is a American Naturaliste , born the August 30th 1842 with Owasso, Michigan and dead the September 29th 1916 in this same city.

He studies the Agriculture and the Biologie in Michigan Agricultural College. He receives his Bachelor there off Sciences in 1862 and his Master off Sciences in 1864. He continues his studies with Harvard under the direction of Louis Agassiz (1807-1873) and of Hermann August Hagen (1817-1893). In 1867, Cook becomes instructor of Mathématiques and starts to teach the Entomologie during one six-month period.

This enthusiastic teacher constitutes a large collection of Insecte S with the assistance of his students and collectors in various places of the the United States. It is also interested in the agricultural problems. Cook thus carries out an emulsion of soap and kerosene in 1877. This invention whose Charles Valentine Riley (1843-1895) asserts paternity. Later, Leland Ossian Howard (1857-1950) will determine that the true discoverer of this technique is certain Henry Bird of Neward in the New Jersey.

In 1880, Cook introduces the use of the Vert of Paris to control the populations of the Carpocapse of apples and the pears, a butterfly of Tortricidae, frightening ravageur.

In 1876, it makes appear Manual off the Apiary of which the popularity which it knows nineteen editions until in 1910, representing 21.000 specimens. It takes part in the foundation of the American Association Economic Entomologists, it ensures the second vice-presidency near Stephen Alfred Forbes (1844-1930) like first vice-president, and the first vice-presidency in 1889 - 1890 with C.V. Riley as president.

In 1894, it leaves Michigan to become professor of Biologie in Pomona College in the south of the California. With Charles Fuller Baker (1872-1927), it organizes a dynamics department of biology and entomology. It brings its assistance to the fruit producers of the State: it organizes in particular 89 clubs of farmers in the counties of the south. It ensures an hotline, an insurance, co-operatives and the scientific study of their agricultural problems to them. He plays a big role in 1912 at the time of the vote of the law establishing a system of forty for the imports. He makes appear hundreds of articles in various agricultural reviews.

He plays a very important part so much as professor, Edward Oliver Essig (1884-1964) will be one of his pupils, that like person in charge of the financing of various publications Journal off Entomology, Journal off Economic Botany and Report off the Laguna Beach Marine Laboratory .

Its library, to which that of c.f. Baker was added, was bequeathed to Pomona College and is known today under the name of Bibliothèque Cook-Baker.
