Albert Herter

Albert Herter , born with New York in 1871 and died in Santa Barbara (California) in 1950, is a American painter.

Biography

Albert Herter belongs to the dynasty of the Herter brothers. He is wire of Christian Herter, decorator of interior and creator of furniture of the years 1860-1890. This family of the American upper middle classes lives with Long Island, more precisely in East Hampton, in the avenue Georgia Pond. Though celebrates, Christian cherishes the dream to be a painter. Ten years after the birth of Albert, that is to say in 1881, it leaves America to go to study painting with Paris, where it is struck of Tuberculose. As of his adolescence, Albert wants to take again the dream of his father. He studies in New York with Art Students League before going to improve in Paris, in the workshop of Jean-Paul Laurens. It is there that it meets Adele McGinnis, also coed in painting, which will become his wife. He inherits the immense fortune of his father; it is girl of a banking richissime. Albert Herter is also the author of various works, especially of the accounts. He is also the father of Christian Herter, governor of the Massachusetts and second Secretary of State of Eisenhower. Moreover, the couple creates its own company of textiles, hangings, doors, curtains and sumptuous panoramic painted, of which the famous Cactus . The already considerable company meets an immense success, and the fame of the couple is worth as much for decoration and the illustration that for painting. Later, Albert off teaches with the Illinois Institute Art of Chicago.

Adele dies in 1946 in the house Island Length. Albert settles with the Algonquin hotel while continuing his alternations between the West and Is. It spends the last years of its life to write its memories, published under the title has Dubious Lineage . He dies in 1950, with the hotel El Mirasol Hotel, in California.

The Departure of hairy, August 1914

Albert Herter is known in France to be the author of a monumental painting of 60m, the Departure of hairy, August 1914 , exposed since 1926 in the hall of the departures of the Gare of the East to Paris. This fabric illustrates the departure for the face of the French soldiers, the Poilus, mobilized in 1914. It was painted in remembering her son, Everit Albert, killed close to Castle-Thierry in the last months of the war and was inaugurated in the presence of the Maréchal Joffre.

During the restoration of the station for the reception of TGV Is, the fabric was withdrawn in February 2006 without the SNCF not providing information on its future reinstalment.
