Albert Doyen

Albert Doyen (born the April 3rd 1882 with Vendresse in the the Ardennes - died the October 22nd 1935) was a Musicien French.

He began his musical studies with the École Niedermeyer and continued them with the Conservatoire of Paris, where he was the pupil of Charles-Marie Widor for the composition.

It was particularly sensitive to the social questions. And, conscious of the educational value of the music, it wished to spread it in the people.

In 1907, it joined the community “Abbaye of Creteil”, founded by Georges Duhamel and Charles Vildrac. This group gathered poets, writers, musicians and painters (like Albert Gleizes). It is Albert Doyen who initiated Georges Duhamel with the music.

In 1917, it founded " The Festivals of the people " , a choral society of workmen. Resolutely popular, the choral society was supplemented of a orcheste. The first service of this unit took place for a birthday of the Commune of Paris; it was followed of more than two hundred other concerts. Some of them attracted more than four hundred people. The last concert of the Fêtes of the people took place in 1939.

In 1919, it organized a Festival of the Memory to the memory of Jean Jaurès.

Albert Doyen died of an brain attack.

In an article which it devotes to the " Festivals of the people " (in The French Re-examined , vol. 65, n° April 5th, th and th 1992), Nancy Sloan Goldberg attaches the project of Albert Doyen to the tradition of the Utopies of the XIXe century and particularly to the " principles universalists of the Unanimism ".
