Albert Betz
Albert Betz (December 25th 1885 - April 16th 1968), is a German Physicien , pioneer of wind technologies .
He obtains in 1910 his diploma for the occupation of naval engineer of the technical Université of Berlin ( Technische Hochschule Berlin ). In 1911 Betz becomes researcher at the laboratory of Aérodynamique of the Université of Göttingen, where it obtains in 1919 his Doctorat for work on “the minimization of the losses of energy of the propellers of propulsion of the boats”.
It publishes in 1920 the article Das Maximum DER theoretisch möglichen Ausnutzung of Windes durch Windmotoren (“Maximization of the theoretical potential exploitation of the wind in the engines with wind”).
The Formule of Betz shows that independently of the model of turbine alone 16/27 (approximately 59%) of the kinetic energy of the wind can be transformed into mechanical energy. Its book Wind-Energy und ihre Ausnutzung durch Windmühlen (“wind energy and its exploitation in the windmills”), published in 1926 gives a good outline of the knowledge of energy and wind turbines at that time.
In 1926 it is named professor with Göttingen, and of 1936 to 1956 succeeds Ludwig Prandtl with the head of the laboratory of aerodynamics. Of 1947 with 1956 it leads research in Hydrodynamique to the Institut max Planck.
In 1965 the West German academy of Sciences decrees to him the medal Carl Friedrich Gauss.
