Albert Béguin (July 17th 1901 with La Chaux-de-Fonds, Swiss - May 3rd 1957 with Rome) is a writer, critical and editor Suisse.

Biography

In 1919, it obtains its baccalaureat with the Gymnasium of the Chaux-de-Fonds. From 1919 to 1924, Albert Béguin studies with the Université of Geneva and obtains an arts degree. He leaves then for Paris, where he is bookseller and translator of German romantic authors like Jean-Paul and E.T.A. Hoffmann. Albert Béguin spends then five years as a reader of language and literature Frenchwomen to the University of Halle. In parallel, it prepares its work on the German romanticism the romantic äme and the dream which is a great success. It is also interested in the rise of the Nazism and denounces the role of the academics, the camps of work and persecution against the Jews.

In 1934, Albert Béguin obtains a post of teacher to the Jean-Calvin college, and in 1937 it supports its thesis of doctorate to the Université of Geneva: the dream among romantic German and in modern French poetry . From 1937 to 1946, it occupies the pulpit of French literature to the Université of Basle. Its courses reflect its personal concerns: the spiritual dimension of poetic creation (at Claudel or Nerval), existential concern (at Leon Bloy or Bernanos), the lost paradise (at Alain-Baker). Since 1942, Albert Béguin creates and directs the Cahiers of the Rhone (Baconnière). He succeeds thus, by publishing works of Charles Péguy, Louis Aragon, Paul Éluard, Pierre Emmanuel, Loys Masson, Pierre Jean Jouve, Guy Lévis Mano, Jean Cayrol or Jules Supervielle, to support, during the war, the fight of the French writers for the values of France in the middle of threatened Europe. He collaborates in other resistant Swiss publications, as the collection Cri of France (University Bookstore of Freiburg) where he publishes his famous translation of the Search of the Graal .

In 1946, it goes back to Paris. With died of Emmanuel Mounier in 1950, it will occupy until its death the direction of the review Esprit, in which it will defend the creative freedom of the writers. One owes him of the studies on India, Germany, and of the works of literary criticism devoted to Blaise Pascal, Honore de Balzac, Gerard de Nerval, Charles Péguy, Leon Bloy or Charles Ferdinand Ramuz.

In 1929, it Marie with the novelist Raymonde Vincent, Price Fémina in 1937. His/her brother is the journalist Pierre Béguin.

The adviser of Freibourgese State Denis Clerc devoted his thesis of doctorate to him.

The site of the review Esprit characterizes its work thus:

Successor of Marcel Raymond at the University of Basle after 1937, founder in 1941 of the Books of the Rhone published with Baconnière, the second director of the Esprit review is a badly known figure. Whereas it takes the delicate changing of the founder and directs the review during one difficult period, that during which the “philocommunism” and the spirit of the fellow travellers strongly weigh, one often considers that this large academic, specialist in Balzac, of Nerval and the German romanticism, this precursor of the literary school of Geneva whose Jean Starobinski is one of the continuators today, was projected a little by chance with the head of the review. It is to forget that it has allowed review to pass course difficult from beginning of the year 1950 (cold war is with its roof), that he developed the literary dimension of this publication of an exemplary manner (see its contributions to the file on the psychiatry of 1952 and the prisons in 1955) and that he was a lucid traveller, able for example to propose an assessment of the situation in India. Like few feathers in the history of Spirit, it reflected in geopolitical terms, and its chronicles on the respective role of Europe, to Germany, to America, to India and Asia, testify to a singular force of political and spiritual analysis.
