Albatross D.II

The Albatros D.II is a single-seat biplane of hunting of the First World War. This extremely solid and nimble aircraft was, with the Fokker D.II, one of the reasons for which the AlliƩs lost their air superiority on the Western face at the beginning of 1917.

Development

The Idflieg reproaching D.I its lack of visibility forwards, the higher plan was lowered by 36 cm. Other modifications of detail were made to the single-seater, of which a series of 100 specimens were ordered in August 1916, while provisions were taken for a production under license by LVG. 28 D.II arrived at the face in November 1916 at the sides of D.I, 217 in January 1917.

Production

Carrying designation manufacturer L.17 , 200 Albatros D.II were produced by Albatros Werke AG, and 75 pennies license by LVG. In Austria Oeffag (Oesterreichische Flugzeugfabrik AG) produced 16 D.II with a Austro-Daimler engine of 185 ch for K.u.K. Luftfahrttruppen in the series, before giving up this apparatus for D.III. Oeffag D.II was characterized moreover by an increase in cords in 10 cm and modifications of the fuselage.

Derived

  • Albatross D.IV : Intended for in-flight tests of the engine Mercedes D III equipped with a reducer bringing back to 900 rpm the number of revolutions of the propeller whereas the crankshaft turned to 1.400 turns, three prototypes D.II with grown cell were ordered in November 1916, but only one finished and tested in flight with propellers Bi, sorting or four-bladed. Suffering from vibrations in all the configurations, this hunter was abandoned in April 1918.

Users

  • Germany: Arrived at the face in November 1916, the D.II constituted the initial equipment of Jasta 2. Replaced little by little as from spring 1917 by the Albatross D.III, it remained in service with the face until the end of 1917 and one counted 72 Albatross D.II in first line on the face of the west in June 1917.
