Having established a record of altitude at the beginning of 1914, this apparatus was brought into service by the Luftstreitkräfte like Albatros DD-1 (Doppeldecker 1), but at the beginning of the First World War the designation of the German military apparatuses was standardized and this two-seater not armed thus became the Albatros B.I . Withdrawn of first line in 1915 because too vulnerable, one counted of them approximately 70 more specimens in service in the schools in September 1917, and some specimens were always used as plane of beginning at the time of the Armistice.
Description
This apparatus considered for its robustness was built out of wood, the wings being cloth-lined and the fuselage covered with plywood, like the empennage. Arranged with two cockpits out of tandem, the pilot having sat with the back, it rested on a fixed traditional train, a shoe articulated on the axle of the principal train being used as brake. The two-bladed propeller out of wooden was pulled by a six-cylinder motor in line Mercedes which passed gradually from 75 to 100 then 120 ch.
Adoptee by Austro-Hungarian aviation
The military aviation Austro-Hungarian having decided to use this apparatus, Albatros delivered to its subsidiary company Österreiche Albatros Werke ( O.A.W. ) an intended specimen has evaluations before becoming model of production. Austria not using yet the same designation of the aircraft that Germany, this apparatus became DDK , and was followed of 9 specimens of series, of which some apparatuses modified to test a new aerofoil drawn by Knoller. O.A.W. then produced Albatros B.I (standardized designation) in the series, them with Knoller aerofoil and approximately 70 specimens in the series. It should be noted that it, which was never delivered to the face, is exposed today to the Heeresgeschichtliche Museum Austrian.
