The town of Albany is the capital of the State of New York, with the E. - U.. With the census of 2000, the city counted: 95658 inhabitants. The agglomeration of Albany-Troy-Schenectady counts 851.000 inhabitants. Albany is located at 233 km in the north of New York, near the confluence between the river Mohawk and the Hudson. It is also the chief town of the county of Albany.
Albany maintains the close links with the towns of Troy and Schenectady, forming a unit named Capital District.
History
The colonial history of Albany started when an English, Henry Hudson, exploring for the Compagnie Dutchwoman of the Western Indies on his ship Halve Maen (the Half the Moon), arrived in the area in 1609. In 1619, the company establishes its first commercial counter close to current Albany. In 1624, the first military installation of the colony of the New-Country-Low ( Nieuw-Nederland ), Strong Orange, was built in the area and was baptized in the honor of princes d' Orange. In the neighborhoods, the village of Beverwijck was created in 1652. When the English took the control of this territory in 1664, it was re-elected Albany, in the honor of the Duc of York and Albany, which became later Jacques II of England. The Duke of Albany was generally the Scottish title given since 1398, with youngest wire of the Scottish sovereign. The name comes from Alba, the name Gaélique for Scotland.
Albany obtained a charter and became a commune in 1686.
In 1754, seven representatives of the British colonies of North America met at the time of the Congress of Albany. Benjamin Franklin, originating in Pennsylvania presented the Plan Albany d' Union, the first formal proposal to link the colonies.
In 1797 the capital of the State of New York was transferred from Kingston to Albany.
