Albanel

Albanel is a canton of the Quebec, located in the regional Municipalité of county of Maria-Chapdelaine and the administrative area of the Saguenay-Lake-Saint-Jean. This canton of rather flat, variable relief from 121 to 198 meters, is located at the west of the Rivière Mistassini. The heart of the municipality is concentrated on a small plate around which one finds arable lands.

History

The municipality of Albanel is born because of these grounds favourable with agriculture. With the passing of years, the inhabitants develop a strong feeling of membership for the corner of country. Thus, the weak population is caught in hand and decides to occupy its place, so small is it, in the economy jeannoise. The municipality is the first with the Lac St-Jean to be obtained a popular case. Moreover, the agricultural cooperative of the village remains during several years one of richest of the area. Although today, there are very few industries, the citizens are interdependent and take an active part in the development of the municipality.

Economy

The large majority of the inhabitants of Albanel have an employment in a surrounding municipality. Although there is an industrial park with Albanel, this one with the disadvantage of being located outside the village. So industries do not have access to the systems of aqueduct and sewer. Only industries that one finds there are a saw mill and a company of excavation. The remainder of industry albanéloise is summarized with some farms, of the bleuetières like some forestry companies.

Toponym

Does the name of the municipality point out Charles Albanel (1616? - 1696), which was a missionary Jésuite and an explorer of Québécois north. By borrowing the Mistassini river, it went up the current to the Lake of the same name. He will die in Sault co. Marie in Ontario after 47 years in News-France.

Festival of the gourgane

Created in 1974 by the mayor of the time, Mr. Fernand Plourde, the festival of the gourgane is the most important social activity of the village. It attracts a few thousands of visitors at each year. The impossible to circumvent ones of the festival are the bus without roof in which plays the song of the festival in loop, the Gourfanel mascot and the tournament of ball given. There are also other very popular activities like the races of 4X4, the drags of 4 wheels and the musical productions. It should be noted that all the activities are free. The festival takes place at the time of the last end of the week of July.
