Alban de Verulamium

Saint Alban de Verulamium is a saint Christian, first Martyr of England, died around 303 and celebrated the June 22nd.

Hagiography

Alban accommodates a priest Christian missionary sought by the pagan Empereur named Dioclétien, man without pity, not having of cease to persecute the Christians until burning their church S. of it.

Taken friendship by this priest, Alban receives from him the Christian instruction and the Baptism, during the night. Soon, a magistrate of the emperor who persecuted the Christians discovers them. He delivered himself to the place of the missionary and was decapitated, in 287. The legend affirms that on the way of its martyrdom the miracles were numerous and that it converts its torturer who was carried out with him.

This Saint is honoured like the first martyr (one also speaks about protomartyr) with England.
