Alba de Tormes

Alba de Tormes is a commune of Spain, in the Province of Salamanque, autonomous community of Castille-and-León.

The commune confronts: in north Garcihernández, the east Aldeaseca de Alba, in south-east Naval, the south Encinas de Arriba, in south-west Martinamor, and the west Terradillos.

History

Alba de Tormes is a commune in charge of history. It was the seat of the Duchy of Alba de Tormes. Moreover one finds there the tomb of Therese d' Avila, where its intact body is preserved.

Economy

Its economy is based on cereals, sugar beets, chick-peas, potatoes. It is about a culture in dry zone.

Monuments

- Basilica: (XIXe S). It was conceived to shelter the remainders of Holy and to accommodate the thousands of pilgrims who come to see them. To notice the 8 side chapels.

- Castle of the Dukes of Alba: Its construction started about 1430, and finished in XVIe century. It was the residence of the Dukes of Alba. The sobriety of the severos walls of the antique Torre del Homenaje ( Turn of the Homage ), contrast with the size of its interior, where the Sala of Armería has exceptional frescos of the Rebirth realized by Italian Cristóbal Passini. The low room shelters an interesting exposure of the archaeological remainders met at the time of the excavations carried out in the castle in 1993.

- College - Seminar San Jerónimo: It is a monastery which belonged to the Prémontrés and which after passed to the order of San Jeronimo, from where its name. Currently it is a college of the Pères Reparadores Colegio Seminario San Jerónimo.

- Church of Santiago: It is oldest of Alba. It was used as inn to the pilgrims. One finds there a juxraposition of morisque and novel in a mixture of brick and stone.

- Church of San Juan of Cruz: First church in the world dedicated to the saint Carmelite nun.

- Church of San Juan: It was built at the end of XIIe century. and at the beginning of XIIIe. It is of style novel-mudéjar. She was declared Monument National.

- Church of San Pedro: Gothic Portail which remains after a fire which destroyed the building completely. It is the seat parroissial of Alba.

Festivals

- February 5th.

- 25 - August 27th: Transverberation of Holy Therese or Festival of the summer celebrates.

- 14 - October 22nd: Employers' festivals in the honor of Holy Therese.
