Alatyr (,) is a city of the republic of Tchouvachie, in Russia, located on the river Soura, with its junction with the river Alatyr. Its population rises with 42  700 inhabitants (2005)   ; (43  161 in 2002  ; approximately 43  000 in 1968).

It is one of the oldest cities of Tchouvachie. It was founded in 1552 like posts strengthened and obtained the statute of city in 1780. It gained a great economic importance in 1894 after the construction of the railway line Moscow-Riazan-Kazan.
