The alarming specter is a mythical animal, remote cousin of the European dragons, who generally has gigantic dimensions. Ex: Jörmungand, Ouroboros… (myths and legends).

He lives especially in water of the Scandinavian countries

The octopus and the squid giants

These two species are also of good candidates to the role of alarming specter. A certain number of observations leave think that in fact tentacles floating on the surface would have been seen by the sailors.

They would be also at the origin of the legend of the Kraken.
