Alan Smithee

Alan Smithee was born with Hollywood in 1955: it is the Pseudonyme used with the the United States by the Réalisateur S déboutés or dissatisfied with their film. Alan Smithee is besides the ironic Anagramme of The Alias Men (“men in the name of loan” in French).

In country where the Oscar of the best film is often allotted to its producing (which also has the last word on the '' final cut ''), the DGA ( Directors Guild off America , the trade union of the realizers) fought during years to impose the Réalisateur like the author of film. A contrario , it does not authorize a realizer to use a pseudonym or to ask for the withdrawal of its name of the generic . If it estimates that its work was ridiculed by its producer, a realizer can nevertheless seize the DGA. If its request is accepted, this one authorizes it to sign its film Alan Smithee.

The name appears for the first time in 1955 in the film of television The Indiscret Mrs. Jarvis . The first film of cinema signed Alan Smithee is a handle of leads ( Death off has Gunfighter ) realized in 1967 by Don Siegel and Robert Totten:

When I refused to be credited for the realization with the film a lead handle, just as Bob Totten, the DGA invented a pseudonym for Totten and me, Allen Smithee. As the film was rather well accommodated, I said to all my friends who wanted to be realizers to change their name for Smithee and to assert the paternity of film. I do not know if somebody did it. I still think that in certain circumstances they could have broken the magic barrier and have become realizers.

When I refused to take directing credit for the film Death off has Gunfighter , ace did Bob Totten, the Directors' Guild made up has pseudonym for Totten and myself, “Allen Smithee”. Ace the picture was well received, I told my Young friends who wanted to Be directors to changes to their off name to Smithee and take credit for direction the picture. I don' T know yew anyone did this. Nevertheless, since the publicity made around the pseudonym by the film Year Alan Smithee Film: Burn Hollywood Burn (1997), the DGA does not regard any more the name as an effective pseudonym.

His/her daughter, director, work under the name of Alison E. Mathiew.

In 2008, to France its film entitled will leave: " Rien+l' infini" product for Canal Plus.
