Alan Bartlett Shepard Jr (1923 - 1998) was the first American Astronaute .
It was selected in 1959 by the any news NASA to belong to the first group of 7 astronauts of the Programme Mercury.
Thereafter, it was pilot of concerning the mission Mercury-Atlases 9, but was later interdict of flight because of a disease of the internal ear (Maladie of Menière) until May 1969 (period during which it officiated as Chef of the Office of the astronauts).
10 years after its flight in Freedom 7, it was ordering mission Apollo 14 which was posed on the lunar hills of FRA Mauro on February 5th, 1971 with 9:18 min. It was the fifth man to be gone on the moon and the first player of lunar Golf (as it had promised with his father).
It had (at this time) the record of duration on the Moon (33 hours) and the record of exits on the Moon (9 hours 17 minutes at 2 exits), exceeded later by the three other missions Apollo.
It resumed the work of Chief of the Office of the astronauts in June 1971.
It left NASA and the Marine the August 1974, with the rank of Rear-admiral, to join the “Marathon Company Construction” of Houston, Texas, as associated and chair.
Later, Alan B. Shepard will be President of the companies “Seven/fourteen” in Houston.
Alan B.Shepard is deceased of a leukemia the July 21st 1998 at the age of 74 ans.
