Alairac

Alairac is a common French, located in the department of the Aude and the area Languedoc-Roussillon. Its inhabitants is called Alairacois.

Geography

Built on a nipple with the foot of the Massive of Malepère, Alairac is a circular village or Circulade of the year millet. This village dominates the plain where curves the Canal of the South and the sight extends on a superb panorama limited to north by the Black Montagne, in the center one discovers the Cité of Carcassonne and more in the south, the solid mass of Malepère, wood cover of oaks, field of the mushroom wild boars and pick-ups.

History

The first writings on the castle appear in 1063, probable construction of the circulade, it belongs then to the count de Foix, Roger Ier de Foix. During years, it is exchanged several times between the county of Foix and the Vicomté of Carcassonne, the family Trencavel.

At the time of the Albigensian Crusade, towards the , Easter 1210 Simon de Montfort besieged the castle of Alairac during eleven days with the end of which the inhabitants, fearing to be obliged to go, fled nuitamment. In 1309, the perfect last cathare known, Guilhem Bélibaste, flees in Catalonia in company of Philippe d' Alayrac. This last, at the time of its return to the country, undoubtedly was taken again and burned.

On the noise of the approach of large the company of Truck drivers, in 1366, the officers of the seneschalsy of Carcassonne ordered to the inhabitants of the castle of Alairac, which belonged to Jean of Armagnac, to strengthen and destroy the suburbs. Having neglected to carry out this order, the Viscount in anger put fire at the castle which was entirely flaring. Later, the count of Armagnac yielded the ground of Alairac to the marquis of Mirepoix (1404). The seigniory was sold at the beginning of the 18th century, with a middle-class man of Carcassonne. This seigniory is extinct with the revolution, in 1789.
