Alain Tanner is a Réalisateur Suisse born with Geneva, the December 6th 1929.

Biography

He studied the economic scenes. With Claude Goretta, it founds in 1951 the university film club of Geneva. At 23 years, it engages for a two years training course in the merchant navy.

From 1955 to 1958, it remains in London where it will be impassioned for the cinema and finds an employment with the British Film Institute of London. In 1957, it carries out its first film, with Claude Goretta Nice Time (Picadilly the night) . The film obtains the Price of Experimental Film to the Festival of Nice 1957.

Of return of England, it enters as realizer to the French-speaking Switzerland Télévision where it will sign several short films and of documentary (like that on the Inondations of Florence of the 12/1/1966).

In 1968, it founds the Groupe of the 5 with Michel Soutter, Claude Goretta, Jean-Louis Roy and Jean-Jacques Lagrange, instrument of dialog intended to promote the young Swiss Cinema.

It was especially made known in the Années 1970 by films like the Salamander (with Bulle Ogier) or Jonas which will have 25 years in the year 2000 , like with dead or sharp Charles .

Its ideas, its cinema

To tan, the cinema resulting from contemporary marketing is arranged in the " category; anticonstitutionnel". Cantor of the esthetic antiliberalism, Tanner proposes a cinema with counter-current: " I am not synchronous any more whole. But taking into account the air of time, I find that rather amusing. I would be synchronous today that I would live that like a trahison". To tan regard which should be shared something with the spectator, to hold it with the good distance (neither not to sleep too near, nor not to suffer too far), to offer something to him to dépiauter. Then to live the place where one turns, which one cannot confuse with his enemy, the decoration: " It should be felt, to palpate it with the directions, to let it come to you, by the lights of the morning and the soir." No plans of cut, not of too short plans (small trick to have a successful direct sound). In short, To tan, it is business of felt world, i.e. of policy.
