Alain III of Brittany
Alain III of Brittany , (997 - October 1st 1040), wire and successor of Geoffroy Béranger, count de Rennes and duke of Brittany, and Havoise of Normandy, reigns on Brittany until its death. Descendant of Erispoë, it allotted sometimes the title of king de Bretagne.
10 years old with died of his father, it is pressed on his mother (deceased the February 22nd 1034), then on the bishops of Nantes (Gautier) and of Vannes (his/her uncle Judicaël), like on the archbishop of Dol (Junguené).
Initially in war with the count d' Anjou Foulque Nerra, then with the duke Robert I {{er}} of Normandy, it must lend the homage to this last. After their reconciliation, Robert entrusts to him the supervision of his heir Guillaume Bastard the at the time of his departure for the pilgrimage for Jerusalem in 1034.
In 1035, it constitutes the prerogative of Penthièvre for his/her brother puîné Eudes which of it will be the first count.
Married in 1018 with Berthe, girl of the count Eudes II of Blois, it has two children:
- Conan, duke of 1040 with 1066 under the name of Conan II,
- Havoise of Brittany, which will marry Hoël of Cornwall, which will succeed Conan II in 1066 on the throne of Brittany.
Robert the Splendid one dies in 1035 on the way of return of his pilgrimage and Alain III must intervene militarily in Normandy to preserve there the rights of the young person Guillaume, threatened by the revolt of part of the nobility Norman. He dies during this countryside, with Vimoutiers in 1040, victim of a poisoning. He is buried with the first duke of Normandy in the abbey church of the Trinité to Fécamp.
