Biography

After having studied the Médecine with Liege was responsible for programs of Doctors without borders (1985-1988) in Honduras, in Guinea and in Sudan. He became general secretary of MSF between 1991 and 1995. In parallel, he studied the policy with Science-Po Paris and management with the INSEAD.

In 1991, he became the first general secretary of Doctors without borders (international). For this reason, it has to treat the crises of Bosnia, Iraq, Rwanda and Somalia. In 1995, he was elected senator. After initiatehaving initiated it, he was secretary of the Special subcommittee of the Belgian Senate on the events of Rwanda in 1994 (1997).

Political course

In 1995, it was elected senator at the Belgian Parliament.
In 1999, it is named by it First Vice-president of the commission of the Foreign affairs.
In 2003, it was elected Senator for the French-speaking electoral college.
on June 10th, 2007, it was re-elected at its station of Senator, in spite of his bad place on the list reforming Mouvement, by carrying out one of the best personal scores in the French-speaking electoral college.

Writings and standpoint

Alain Destexhe initially popularized itself like member of a parliamentary commission on the genocide of Rwanda, then in 2000 in the media during a diffusion by the emission Strip Tease with RTBF recalling a Belgian parliamentary mission, " Delegation of very high niveau" , in North Korea: documentary absolutely frightening on the situation in this country which one has if few images but also on the attitude and the frightening positions certain members of this delegation. One saw Destexhe in particular there marking his contempt for the mode in place and the admiring Belgian elected officials of the known as mode.

Alain Destexhe received the Prijs voor of Vrijheid (price of freedom) of Nova Civitas, a liberal movement Flemish. He is also Docteur Honoris Causa de Beloit College (Wisconsin, the USA).

He is actuellment president of Parliamentarians for Global Action , an organization gathering 1300 active members of Parliament in the promotion of peace, the human rights and international justice.
