Alain Carpentier

Alain Carpentier is a Chirurgie N French, born with Toulouse the August 11th 1933, exerting at the department of cardiovascular surgery and transplantation of bodies of the European Hôpital Georges-Pompidou with Paris.

Professor emeritus with the University Pierre-and-Marie-Curie (University Paris VI) with Paris, professor with New York (E. - U.), he is the founder and director of the laboratory of study of the Clerc's Offices and cardiac prostheses of the University Paris VI.

In 1998, he is the prize winner of the Grand Prix of the Foundation for the Medical research, rewarding the unit for a career, for its prestigious research in cardiac surgery.

He is elected member of the Academy of Science, on December 11th, 2000, in the section human Biologie and medical sciences .

He receives in 2007 the Prix Albert Lasker for the medical research.

Its principal achievements are the following ones:

  • implant of the valvular first bioprothèses manufactured in laboratoire  ; these biological valves of animal origin are treated chemically to avoid the immunological rejection.
  • developed of various techniques of plastic surgeon and reconstructive of the valves cardiaques  ; it is from now on almost possible to repair a mitral Valve instead of removing it and to repair a valve tricuspide.
  • discovered dynamic cardiomyoplastie, i.e. the transformation of a skeletal muscle per sequential electric stimulation for its myocardic use as substitute at the man
