Alain Blum
Alain Blum is a Historien and Démographe French, born in 1958. He is research director of the INED, director of studies associated with EHESS and director with the Center with studies with the worlds Russian, Caucasian and center-European (CERCEC).
Research
Alain Blum supported a thesis of doctorate in 1992 on the Soviet demographic systems, under the direction of Marc Ferro.In To be born, to live and die in the USSR , Alain Blum draws up a social Histoire Soviet republics, in margin of the political evolution. He wonders about the manner with which the Soviet mode tried to regulate all the aspects of the social life: birth, life and death.
The results of the Recensement S were hidden with the opinion, then handled with fine policies by Stalin and his successors. Alain Blum presents the evolution of the Death rate in Soviet Union, under the effect of the wars, the famines, the Collectivisation forced and of the Déportation S. It does not line up however behind an analysis of the “Totalitarisme” of the mode. It shows that the Soviets resisted the Propagande and adapted, testimony of a survival of the Civil society. By studying Soviet demography, Blum notes also the continuity of the family structures and, finally, surprising it social immobility.
Alain Blum is member of the editorial board of the review Kritika - Explorations in Russian and Eurasian History and, since 1998, of the Cahiers of the Russian world . In the Center of studies of the worlds Russian, Caucasian and center-European (CERCEC), it animates with Dominique Colas a training seminar on the history of the USSR and the Russia. He collaborated in the collective work the Century of Communisms , appeared in 2000, concerning Soviet demography.
