Al McKibbon

Al McKibbon was Contrebassiste of Jazz of style bop, Hard bop and Latin jazz.

It was born on January 1st 1919 and died the July 29th 2005.

In 1947, after having worked with Lucky Millinder, Smith, J.C. Heard and Coleman Hawkins, it replaced Ray Brown in the orchestra of Dizzy Gillespie until 1950. In the years 1950 it recorded with the nonet Miles Davis, Earl Hines, Count Basie, Johnny Hodges, Thelonious Monk, George Shearing, Cal Tjader, Herbie Nichols and Hawkins. It is in McKibbon that one must have interested Tjader in the music of Latin style whereas he played in his group.

McKibbon always was the subject of an great attention (thus he was the bass player for the Géants of the jazz ), and continued to play until in 2004. In 1999, at 80 years, it recorded its first album under its name Tumbao Para Los Congueros Di Mi Emptied (Blue Lady Records), which was nominated for a Grammy Award of Latin music. A second album was published in 2004: Black Orchid (Nine Music Yards).

He also wrote the postface of the book of Raul Fernandez Latin Jazz , which belongs to a series of Smithsonian Institution on the jazz.
