Career of trainer
After two seasons behind the bench of Saint-Louis, it is recruited by the managing director of the Islanders of New York, Bill Torrey, which seeks a trainer in order to direct his young team which at the time of the Saison LNH 1972-73 will have gained only twelve matches for their first season. The first lesson that Arbor learns with its team is the defensive play. Even if the team does not have extraordinary results (nineteen victories), it grants all the same a hundred goals of less compared to the previous year.
In 1975, Islanders finally manage to rise with the eliminatory Séries. They fall then to the first turn of the series against the rivals of New York, Rangers and even manage to beat them in three matches. The day before the fourth match deu second turn, Islanders are carried out by three matches to zeros by the Penguins de Pittsburgh and Arbor prevents that the first player of its team which doubts the chances of qualification of the team would make better arrange his business and to leave the cloakroom. The shock speech of Arbor to the discounted effect and Penguins are finally isolated series at the end of a seventh match gained on the score of a goal with zero.
The following adversary of Islanders is then the Flyers of Philadelphia, Flyers which also dominate the first three matches before being made join with the score for a seventh match. This time, the chance turns and Flyers gain the series then the Stanley Cut. However, this season will be that of the birth of a large team of Islanders, famous not releasing anything.
During four years which will follow Islanders carried out by Arbor will pass from the stage of “small-poucet” to that of favorites but without will manage to gain the ultimate reward. In 1979, Islanders finish first of the LNH and Arbor gains the Trophée Jack Adams better trainer of the season. Despite everything, once again, the Cut escapes Islanders. Arbor takes conscience then that most important is not the regular season but indeed the series. During the following season, the results of Islanders are not also any more good and the local press starts to murmur the name of Herb Brooks in the event of dismissal of Arbor. However, following the arrival of Butch Goring in March in the team, this one finishes the season on a series of twelve matches without the defeat, propelling best in the possible ways Islanders and Arbor towards their first Coupe Stanley (first as a trainer for Arbor).
Thereafter, the Canadian trainer will lead his team to three new consecutive Stanley Cuts, a record for a team of hockey based with the the United States. He takes his retirement following Saison LNH 1985-86 and accepts a station within the organization of Islanders.
However, the Saison LNH 1988-89 starts well badly for Islanders and Terry Simpson, the trainer in station, is returned at the end of about thirty matches. Arbor thus makes its return behind the bench of the team to try to rectify a team which does not have any more the talent of the beginning of the year 1980, the majority of the high-speed motorboats of the four Cuts not forming part of manpower more. Arbor has not managed to prevent its team from missing for the first time for fourteen seasons the series.
Arbor makes speak last once about its team in 1993 by eliminating Penguins, double holder of the Stanley Cut, in semi-final of the conference of the East. Without the high-speed motorboat Pierre Turgeon, nobody gives Islanders gaining vis-a-vis the best team of the regular season carried out by Mario Lemieux and Scotty Bowman on the bench. Nevertheless, Penguins are inclined at the end of a seventh very disputed match.
After a last season behind the bench, Arbor puts definitively fine at its career in 1994.
November 3rd, 2007, it made a return behind the bench the time of a match to enable him to make its 1500e match in the LNH against Penguins de Pittsburgh with Island Length. This permission is an initiative of Ted Nolan, the trainer of Islanders. At 75 years, he is the trainer (oldest in the history of the LNH) having directed the most matches and having accumulated the most victories with the orders of the same team. He gained this match in a victory of 3-2 against Pittsburgh. Its 740e victory as trainer in the LNH.

The January 25th 1997, a ceremony of commemoration of these matches takes place in the cave of Islanders, the Nassau Veterans Memorial Coliseum, and a struck banner of figure 739 joined the roof of the skating rink.It forms obviously part of the temple of re-elected of Islanders but allowed to the Temple of was also re-elected hockey in 1966.
