The Akan set up a group of people (Ashanti, Baoulé, Agni, Attié, Abé, etc) installed with the Ghana and in Ivory Coast.
On arrival of the Exploring S Portuguese in 1474, these various populations was organized into small independent kingdoms.
Gold appeared so abundant in the area that the Portuguese named it Coast-with-the Or. At the beginning of the 18th century, the Ashanti S constituted powerful a Fédération which resisted to the British during nearly two centuries and only in 1900 was definitively dismantled.
