Ajax wire of Oïlée

See also: Ajax

In the Greek Mythology, Ajax (in Greek old Αἴας Ὀϊλῆος / Aias Oïlễos ), wire of Oïlée (king of Locride), is a hero of the Trojan War. He should not be confused with Ajax wire of Télamon.

Myth

Ajax is counted among the applicants of Helene before the Trojan War.

It is sometimes called “ Ajax small the ”, because of its difference in size with other Ajax. With song II of Iliade , in the Catalog of the vessels, one reads thus (v. 527-530):

“Locriens obey the son of Oïlée, fast Ajax it. It does not have the size of the son of Télamon; it is less large than him, much less large even. But in spite of its small size and its armor of flax, to launch the small swath, it does not have a rival among Panhellènes or the Achaens. ”

During the bag of Troy, he violates Cassandre, priestess of Athéna which beseeched the protection of the goddess. According to the legend, it is this act which explains the ire that the goddess then carries to the Greeks at the time of their returns. Thus, while returning in Locride, Ajax is victim of a shipwreck in a storm started by Athéna. He manages to take refuge on a rock and curses the gods: the storm absorbs it then to punish it of this blasphemy. It is buried with Mycènes by Thétis.

Like Achilles, it is represented like alive after its death in the White Île, with the mouth of the the Danube. It was the subject of a heroic worship at Locriens of Oponte (it appears on certain their parts), which always left in its honor a vacancy in the rows of their army. Sophocle devoted a tragedy now lost to him.
